Dr. Roger W Irvine MBBS, DM

Dr. Roger Irvine is a graduate of the University of the West Indies School of Medicine class of 1990 and went on to specialize in Cardiothoracic Surgery. He was awarded a Commonwealth Scholarship in 1995 to enable a 2 year elective in Adult and Paediatric Cardiac surgery at the Harefield Hospital in the United Kingdom under the world renown Cardiac Surgeon, Professor Sir Magdi Yacoub. He returned to Jamaica in 1998 to complete the Doctor of Medicine post graduate program in Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of the West Indies.

In 2001, he started the pacemaker clinic at the University Hospital of the West Indies, and commenced the implantation of state of the art pacemakers as well as implantable defibrillators, moving the Cardiac Rhythm management program to be on par with first world countries.

His areas of Expertise are Coronary Surgery, Cardiac Valve replacement and Repair, Surgery for Thoracic Aortic Aneurysms and Dissection, Congenital Surgery, Vascular Access techniques (Implantation of Porta-Caths, Dialysis catheters and other vascular access devices), Implantation of Inferior Vena Caval Filters as well as the implantation and follow-up of Pacemakers and Cardiac Defibrillators. He presently works closely with Medtronic as well as Boston Scientific but also remains proficient with the interrogation and programming of St. Jude and Biotronic devices.

Dr. Irvine Provides the following services at the Heart Smart Centre by appointment:

  • Consultation for patients who are deemed to be “surgical” by Dr. Lewis or Dr. Scott. This includes
    • Bypass Surgery candidates
    • Valve repair or replacement
    • Pacemaker and defibrillator implantation
  • Interrogation of pacemaker and defibrillator devices – Medtronic, Boston Scientific, Biotronic and St. Judes
  • No surgery is performed at the Heart Smart Centre – only evaluation and preparation for surgery, for patients requiring same. All surgeries are performed in Kingston mainly at the University Hospital.

Dr. Charmaine Scott OD, Bsc, MBBS, DCH, DM(Paeds)

Dr. Scott is one of the Caribbean’s leading Paediatric Cardiologists. She is an Associate lecturer in the Department of Child and Adolescent Medicine at the University Hospital of the West Indies and has been a Consultant Paediatric Cardiologist at the Bustamante Hospital for over twenty years.

Dr. Scott received her training in medicine and paediatrics at the University of the West Indies and paediatric cardiology at the Institute of Child Health, London (Great Ormond Street Hospital). A graduate of Westwood High School, she also excelled in sports. She was the 1974 Female Champion Athlete at the UWI Intercampus Games (Barbados) and has served as team doctor for the Jamaica Amateur Athletics Association (JAAA).

She is the founder of the Jamaica Down’s Syndrome Foundation, a charity organization which provides support for children with Down’s syndrome and their families. Dr. Scott also established The Children’s Heart and Paediatric Centre, a private facility that provides comprehensive care for children with heart disease.

She has published articles and presented papers at local and overseas conferences and received numerous awards, including:

  • Inductee Westwood High School Hall of Fame – June 2012
  • Rotary International Paul Harris Fellow – Oct 2013
  • Paediatric Association of Jamaica Honoree – April 2015
  • National Honour the Order of Distinction in the rank of Officer (OD) – August 2013

Dr. Scott is married and has identical twin daughters

Dr. Claudine Lewis MBBS, DM

Dr. Lewis is an adult cardiologist, specializing in the heart health care of persons 18 years and older.
She received both her undergraduate and post-graduate degrees from the University of the West
Indies. She received her Bachelor of Sciences degree in Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) from the
University of the West Indies(UWI) in 1999 and Doctor of Medicine in Internal Medicine from the UWI
in 2005.

She later moved to Toronto where she completed a clinical fellowship in Adult Cardiology at the
University of Toronto. During her tenure at the University of Toronto, Dr. Lewis worked at the
Toronto General Hospital, Mt. Sinai, Toronto Western, Sunnybrook and St. Michael’s hospitals
gaining expertise in all aspects of Adult Cardiology including Heart Failure, Electrophysiology,
General Cardiology, Adult Congenital Heart disease, as well as Echocardiography and Cardiac
Catheterization.

After completion of robust training in adult cardiology in 2008, Dr. Lewis returned to
Jamaica, immediately taking up post as Consultant Cardiologist at Cornwall Regional Hospital. Dr.
Lewis dedicated her time to the establishment of a cardiac unit at the Cornwall Regional Hospital.
In May 2009 she founded the Heart Smart Centre to address the growing demand for Heart Health
Care in the private sector. She continued to work part-time in Heart Smart Centre while serving full-
time as Consultant Cardiologist at the Cornwall Regional Hospital, a role she relinquished in May
2018 after 10years. During this time she also served as an associate Lecturer at the University of
the West Indies between July 2008 and December 2017, training third to final year medical students,
interns and residents in the art and science of Internal Medicine and Cardiology.

Since June 2017, Dr. Lewis has devoted her time fully to Heart Smart Centre, training & employing
nurses and allied health professionals in the specialist field of cardiology. Dr. Lewis was born and
raised in Dumfries, St. James, and attended the Mt. Alvernia High School in Montego Bay, Montego
Bay Community college and later Hampton School. She has fulfilled her childhood dream of
returning to her beloved community to bring first-world quality heart health care that is personalized
and accessible to all.

She is a member of the American College of Cardiology, European Society of Cardiology and the
Caribbean Cardiac Society. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, tennis, learning piano and french
and wandering the globe.

Dr. Maria Walywn MBBS, DM

Dr Walwyn is an adult medicine specialist. She completed both her bachelor in medicine and surgery (MBBS) and doctor of internal medicine (DM) at the University of the West Indies in 2001 and 2008 respectively. While her practice is primarily general medicine, she has a special interest in diabetes mellitus. She promotes diabetes prevention through education, appropriate screening and lifestyle changes and offers medical management once diagnosed. She is a consultant at Cornwall Regional Hospital, and also an associate lecturer with the western campus of the University of the West Indies since 2008. Her professional affiliations include membership with Medical Association of Jamaica and the American College of Physicians.
